The Harbor at Dawn

 

 

まだ暗い時間の相差の港。

船のエンジン音と、海の音だけが聞こえていた。

In the still-dark hours at Osatsu’s harbor, only the hum of boat engines and the sound of the sea could be heard.

 

 

少しずつ空が明るくなり、朝焼けから日の出へ。

冬の相差は空気が澄んでいて、景色がとてもはっきり見える。

The sky slowly brightened, shifting from dawn’s glow to sunrise. Winter air in Osatsu is crisp and clear, making the scenery stand out vividly.

 

 

この日は、相差の伊勢海老網漁に同行。

伊勢海老網漁の時期は、11月から4月ごろまで。

相差の冬を代表する、海の仕事。

That day, I joined the Ise lobster net fishing. The season runs from November to April — a defining winter tradition in Osatsu.

 

 

 

海に出ると分かる、相差という町

Seeing Osatsu from the Sea

 

 

船で港を出ると、相差の町の見え方が少し変わってくる。

Once the boat left the harbor, the town of Osatsu revealed itself in a new way.

 

陸から見る海とは違い、海から見る相差は、

「人の暮らしが海と近い町」だと感じた。

From the sea, you realize Osatsu is a place where daily life is deeply tied to the ocean

 

この海は、漁師さんの仕事の場であり、

少し時間が経てば、海女さんたちが潜りに行く海でもある。

It’s the fishermen’s workplace, and soon after, it becomes the diving ground for Ama divers.

 

 

 

伊勢海老網漁を、体験してみて

Experiencing Lobster Net Fishing

 

 

伊勢海老漁というと、どうやって獲っているかは想像したこともなかった。

I had never really imagined how lobsters were caught.

 

相差では、伊勢海老網漁の船が漁港から数船海に向かって走らせる。

この季節になれば当たり前の風景だ。

In Osatsu, several boats head out from the harbor — a familiar sight during the season.

 

 

伊勢海老網漁の仕掛けは、浅瀬、それより少し離れた場所とさまざまだ。

この漁場は、海女たちも潜る場所だ。

お互いの漁場を邪魔しないよう、連携し合っている。

The nets are set in different spots, from shallow waters to further out. These are also areas where Ama divers work, so fishermen and divers coordinate to avoid interfering with each other.

 

 

 

網に掛かった獲物を捕る作業はなかなか時間が掛かる。

日によっては、朝から夕方まで掛かることもあるらしい。

Pulling in the catch takes time — sometimes from morning until evening.

 

 

 

海を知り、人を気遣う船長さん

A Captain Who Knows the Sea and Cares for People

 

 

 

漁師さんというと、無口で厳しいイメージを持つ人もいるかもしれないが、

Many imagine fishermen as stern and quiet.

しかし我らの船長さんはとてもフレンドリー。

操船しながら、

「このあたりは投石*があるあたりだ」＊人工的につくった漁場

「この辺は、海女さんの場所だからね」

と、さりげなく教えてくれた。

But our captain was warm and talkative. While steering, he casually pointed out, “This area has artificial fishing grounds,” or “This is where the Ama divers work.”

 

海を知ることと同時に、

人の仕事を気遣うことも、相差の海では当たり前のことのようだ。

In Osatsu, knowing the sea also means respecting the work of others.

 

 

 

 

伊勢海老網漁のあと、海女さんの漁が始まる時間へ

After Lobster Fishing, It’s Ama Divers’ Turn

 

 

 

伊勢海老網漁が一段落すると、次は海女さんたちが海に向かう時間だ。

Once lobster fishing winds down, it’s time for the Ama divers to head out.

 

同じ海でも、時間帯や場所を少しずつ分けながら、それぞれの漁が行われていく。

The same ocean is shared, divided by time and place, for different kinds of fishing.

 

相差の海は、一日の中で役割を変えながら、人の暮らしを支えているように感じられる。

The sea in Osatsu shifts roles throughout the day, sustaining the rhythm of local life.

 

 

 

相差は「海女の町」だけじゃない

Osatsu Is More Than Just an Ama Town

 

 

 

相差という町を知るとき、「海女の町」というイメージが最初に浮かぶかもしれません。

When people think of Osatsu, “Ama divers’ town” is often the first image.

 

それは、相差の大きな魅力のひとつです。

でも同時に、相差は漁師町でもあります。

That’s true — but Osatsu is also a fishermen’s town.

 

伊勢海老漁があり、そのあとに海女漁があり、同じ海を大切に使い続けてきた町です。

Here, lobster fishing and Ama diving coexist, both relying on the same cherished sea.

The Ama Town Is Right Here

 

 

海女の文化があり、伊勢海老網漁があり、海とともに生きる人たちがいます。

This is where Ama culture thrives, lobster fishing continues, and people live closely with the sea.

 

相差町は、「海女の町」であり、「海の仕事が息づく町」。

Osatsu is both an Ama town and a town where ocean work is alive.
